Canine Gastro-intestinal - Our Services

Share

There are so many factors that come into play when trying to determine the cause for gastrointestinal problems. Ultimately for a true diagnosis, your vet will need to thoroughly examine your pet and they will need to obtain a good history from you to provide insight. In conjunction with this diagnostic testing may be recommended depending on the presenting problem.

Vomiting

  • Vomiting can be confused with regurgitation
  • It involves abdominal heaving / nausea
  • Gastrointestinal causes (i.e. dietary change/indiscretion) or extra-gastrointestinal causes (ie. Pancreatitis)

Diarrhoea

  • There are so many things which can cause diarrhoea, some of these categories are: dietary cause / toxin or drug / extra-gastrointestinal cause / infection / inflammation / partial obstruction / cancer. It can be present for just a few days or even up to weeks in chronic cases. It may be as simple as a dietary change or become life threatening such as severe gastroenteritis.
  • If your pet has diarrhoea and it has been a few days, it may be worth getting them examined by one of our vets. If your dog is showing other systemic signs, such as off their tucker, lethargic, they need to be examined as soon as possible so treatment can be prompt.

Constipation

  • Constipation can be described as difficulty passing faeces or complete inability.
  • To relieve this, your pet may require an enema and/or intravenous fluid therapy. Diagnostic testing such as radiography, ultrasonography, digital palpation and blood hematology and biochemistry panel may also be recommended to assess how severe your pet’s condition is.
  • Causes could be related but not limited to: diet / obstruction / enlarged prostate (common in old, entire male dogs).
  • If your pet is constipated, they need to be examined by a vet that same day. This can be quite an uncomfortable condition for them and should not be left.

Food allergies

  • This can be a challenging condition to diagnose. Owners need to be very vigilant and stick to the treatment plan that their vet has recommended.
  • Food trials are recommended and this you will need to discuss in depth with your treating veterinarian.
  • Clinical signs may include: itchy/ hair-loss / dry skin. These are particularly associated with skin under arms, around eyes and belly.
  • However, other conditions which can also cause these signs are parasites, other allergies, other dermatological causes. See dermatology.
  • If you think your pet may be suffering from a skin problem, please contact the clinic and make an appointment to see one of our friendly vets.
