Pre-breeding exams are useful to detect potential problems and residual problems from previous breeding which could reduce the liklihood of becoming pregnant, carrying a fetus to term, or requiring special treatment to aid a live and healthy foal.
This can include an exam of the external genetalia; exam by palpation; and ultrasound of the ovaries, uterus, cervix and vagina. The vet may also take a swab from the uterus to test for bacterial contamination, and they may biosy the uterine mucosa.
